Exposure & Response Prevention

At NYC Mental Health Counseling, we get straight to the heart of the matter. Our practice is built on the principles of real talk, genuine care, and actionable strategies.

What exactly is Exposure & Response Prevention therapy?

Living in or near a large city has its challenges: high-pressure jobs, complicated relationships, and difficulty slowing down. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy provides a targeted approach to managing these stressors, particularly when they manifest as obsessive-compulsive behaviors or anxieties.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) focuses on breaking the cycle of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. It involves gradually exposing clients to their fear triggers in a controlled setting and teaching them to refrain from the compulsive response they typically perform to reduce anxiety. This method helps individuals confront their fears and reduce their sensitivity to triggers over time. Our therapists employ ERP to teach coping mechanisms that allow for the handling of anxiety without resorting to compulsions. This therapy is highly structured and goal-oriented, aiming to achieve significant improvements in a limited number of sessions. It is particularly effective for treating conditions like OCD, anxiety disorders, and related issues.
