Ever feel like your brain is a hamster on a wheel of worry? Or maybe you just feel blah, like the spark has gone out of life?

These days, anxiety and depression seem to be everywhere.  But before you resign yourself to doom and gloom, let’s talk about a powerful tool: mindfulness.

Hold on, hold on, I know what you’re thinking – “Mindfulness? Isn’t that just sitting cross-legged chanting ‘om’?”.

Nope! Mindfulness is simply about paying attention to the present moment without judgment. It’s about quieting the mental chatter and focusing on what’s happening right now.

Why is this helpful for anxiety and depression?

Because both these conditions thrive on dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.

Mindfulness helps us break free from that cycle and reconnect with the present moment, where there’s actually some peace to be found.

Ready to give it a try? Here are some simple exercises to get you started:

  • The Breath is Your Anchor: Find a quiet spot, close your eyes (or soften your gaze), and focus on your breath. Feel your belly rise and fall with each inhale and exhale. If your mind wanders, gently guide it back to your breath. Start with just a few minutes and gradually increase the duration as you get comfortable.
  • The Body Scan:  Lie down comfortably and bring your awareness to different parts of your body, one at a time. Notice any sensations – tightness, warmth, tingling. Don’t judge, just observe. This can help release tension and bring a sense of calm.
  • Mindful Eating:  We often eat on autopilot, shoveling food in while distracted by our phones.  Next time you eat, slow down!  Notice the colors, textures, and flavors of your food. Savor each bite.  Mindful eating can help you appreciate your food and create a healthier relationship with it.

These are just a few starting points. There are many mindfulness resources available online and through apps.

Remember, mindfulness is a practice, not a destination.

It takes time and effort, but the benefits are real. With regular practice, you can build your resilience against anxiety and depression and cultivate a more peaceful state of mind.
